A helical antenna having one or more wires (3, 3a, 4, 5; 14, 15, 16, 17; 27, 28, 29) fed at a voltage maxima along each wire at resonance. Preferably the antenna is a multifilar helical antenna and the wires (3, 3a, 4, 5; 14, 15, 16, 17; 27, 28, 29) are fed at centrally located voltage maxima. The length of the antenna is preferably an integer multiple of half the wavelength at which the antenna operates in resonant mode. The ends of the wires (3, 3a, 4, 5; 14, 15, 16, 17; 27, 28, 29) may be open or short circuited.
