The air chambers (12, 14, 16) and valves (22, 24, 26) close upon the application of an axial force, thereby sealing air within the air chambers (12, 14, 16). After the energy absorbing apparatus (10) has reached the end of its compressive stroke, the valve members (22, 24, 26) release sequentially, thereby venting the pressurized air in the air chambers (12, 14, 16) to minimize rebound. |
