An apparatus for imaging skin ridges comprises a light transmissive body (1) having a surface (2) for receiving a relief pattern (3) from, for example, the pad of a finger, and a light source (4) which illuminates the surface and generates an optical image (5) of the relief pattern. A light transmissive heating element (7) is provided adjacent the surface of the body to heat the skin ridges in operation. The increase in the temperature of the skin makes it more flexible. It also promotes sweat secretion. Both factors improve the optical coupling between the finger and the surface resulting in more reliable fingerprint imaging. |
