PURPOSE: To obtain the superoxide dismutase useful as an ingredient for medicines, cosmetics, etc., and stable in a wide range by culturing a microorganism belonging to the genus Bacillus and accumulating the superoxide dismutase in the cell. CONSTITUTION: A microorganism belonging to the genus Bacillus and accumulating SOD in the cell, such as Bacillus sp. SN-K16 (FERM BP-3376) or Bacillus sp. KSM-K14, is cultured to obtain the SOD having following properties. (1) The SOD has the optimal pH at approximately 7.5, and is stable in a pH range of 5-10; (2) the SOD holds the activity of >=80% up to 55 deg.C and holds the activity of approximately 50% at 60 deg.C; (3) the mol. wt. is 50000±3000 by a gel filtration method, and 25000±1000 by a SDS-PAGE method; (4) the SOD has the isoelectric point at a pH of 4.5±0.3; (5) the SOD has the maximum absorption peaks at 280nm and 470nm; (6) the SOD contains Mn<2+> (visible region absorptionλmax =470 nm). |
