This invention relates to a new shock absorbing material which may be used as a insole or as a midsole for an article of footwear. The shock absorber comprises a multi-cell membrane which has been embedded in a flexible envelope. The shock absorber exhibits improved shock absorbing characteristics which increases the comfort of the wearer for the shoes and reduces damage to the foot during athletic exercises.
