PURPOSE: To provide a magnetic head having gap depth ends exactly coincided with each other and excellent in recording and reproducing ability. CONSTITUTION: A gap material is held between metallic magnetic films formed on nonmagnetic substrates 1 to form a magnetic gap 3. The gap depth of this gap 3 is <=4μm and the surface roughness of parts of the substrates near the gap depth ends of the gap 3 is <=1/10 of the gap depth.
