PURPOSE: To obtain a small type variable resistor of high reliability by a method wherein a stopper, with which a contact is engaged to a case, is formed by bending the contact arm, which is provided extending from a sliding piece main body, and a stopper piece, and at the same time, a clutch arm, both ends of which are connected to the sliding piece main body, is provided. CONSTITUTION: When an adjusting screw 31 is rotated, a rotor 11 is rotated to the prescribed direction. At this time, as the engaging part 9 of the clutch arm of a sliding piece 1 is engaged to the engaging part 13 on the rotor side, the sliding piece corotates and the contact 6 of the sliding piece 1 slidingly moved on the resistance film of a resistance substrate 21 and a collector. The rotor 11 is rotated, and when the stopper 1a of the sliding piece 1 is brought into contact with the stopper 41a on the case side, the clutch arm 10 is sagged, the engaged part 9 of the engagement part 13 on the rotor side are disengaged, and the rotor 11 slides. As a result, the breakage of the slidingly moving part and the like due to over-rotation can be prevented completely.
