PURPOSE: To obtain an antioxidant, consisting essentially of a specific thianthrene-2,3,7,8-tetrols, capable of manifesting excellent antioxidizing activities without any skin irritancy or sensitizing properties, excellent in preservation stability and useful as a cosmetic or a skin preparation for external use, etc., for preventing and reducing the skin senescence. CONSTITUTION: This antioxidant consists essentially of compounds represented by the formula (R1 and R2 are each H, an alkyl, an alkenyl or an aryl) (e.g. thianthrene-2,3,7,8-tetrol). When the compounds which are antioxidant components are blended with a base for a preparation for external use such as a cream or an ointment and used, an extremely trace amount of 1-500μg compounds, represented by the formula, based on 100g product and blended therein is effective. A skin cream containing the antioxidant blended therein is obtained by mixing and dissolving, e.g. an oily phase ingredient for the cream with the antioxidant, heating the resultant mixture at 75 deg.C, adding the prepared solution to another aqueous solution of a water- soluble ingredient for the cream heated at 75 deg.C, preemulsifying the mixture, uniformly emulsifying the preemulsion with a homomixer, cooling the prepared emulsion and adding a perfume thereto at 50 deg.C.
