PURPOSE: To efficiently obtain an optically active aliphatic alcohol which is useful as a starting substance for medicines or agrochemials or an intermediate for liquid crystals by subjecting racemic alcohol dibasic acid diester and higher alcohols to transesterification reaction in the presence of a heat-resistant enzyme under specific conditions followed by the vacuum distillation of the product. CONSTITUTION: (A) A diester from a racemic aliphatic alcohol, for example, (R,S)-1-chloro-octanol, and a tribasic acid, for example, 1,20-eicosadicarboxylic acid and (B) a 16 or more C optically not active and not-racemic alcohol are used as starting substances to effect transesterification reaction in the presence of heat-resistant lipase originating from a microorganism in Alcaligenes without solvent for the starting substances under anhydrous conditions under reduced pressure at a temperature over 80 deg.C and the formed optically active alcohol is efficiently separated by vacuum distillation, which is useful as a starting material or intermediate for medicines or agrochemicals or a synthetic intermediate for speciality chemicals such as liquid crystal. |
