PRODUCTION OF 5-BROMO-2-FURFURAL DERIVATIVE

PURPOSE: To obtain a 5-bromo-2-furfural derivative stably, readily and in high yield useful as an intermediate for a medicine, a dye and a photographic material by reacting bromine with a furan derivative in the presence of an amide compound. CONSTITUTION: Bromine is reacted with a furan derivative of formula II (R<4> and R<5> are each H or a halogen) (e.g. furfural) in the presence of an amide compound of formula I [R<1> to R<3> are each H or a (substitute) alkyl] (e.g. dimethylbenzamide) preferably at 10-60 deg.C to give the objective compound. The reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of a carbonate or by using an ester-based organic solvent. Magnesium carbonate or barium carbonate is preferable as the carbonate. The objective compound is preferably a compound of formula III.
