PURPOSE: To provide an antitheft apparatus for vehicles that allows engine start when a predetermined operation is performed even if transmitters are destroyed or all lost and an ID code cannot be transmitted. CONSTITUTION: This apparatus includes an immobilizer unit 4 which checks a characteristic ID code from a transponder 1 against the ID code of the immobilizer unit 4 and which outputs code words to an EGI unit 9 when the codes match, and an EGI unit 9 which checks the code words against the code words stored in the EGI unit 9 and which permits engine start when they match. The immobilizer unit 4 includes an indicator 16 which, when the codes cannot be checked or when the result of checking indicates that the codes do not match, reports this to the driver by means of predetermined action, and a CPU 8 which controls the EGI unit 9 to permit engine start when the code words are entered by a predetermined operation corresponding to the indicator 16.
