The refrigerator has the motor-compressor unit mounted at the rear of the cabinet, with a food storage chamber in the space remaining to the front of the refrigerator cabinet. This storage has recesses to accept two closed containers (21) placed side- by-side. The bottom lip (4) of the door opening is higher to accommodate the storage containers.The containers are hinged from the rear so they can be tilted upward to allow removal for cleaning. The containers each have a hinged lid (13) to protect their contents. In the closed position the two containers form a flat surface with the top surface of the enclosure for the motor-compressor unit, extending the useful storage space at the bottom of the refrigerator.
