PURPOSE: To obtain a car navigation system in which a user can modify the scale of displayed map with no strange feeling by compositing first and second map information to generate third map information and switching the image to be displayed from the first image information through the third image information to the second image information. CONSTITUTION: When an automobile begins to run, a vehicle position operating section 18 specifies the position of the vehicle based on a running speed and a rotational angle detected by a vehicle speed sensor 15 and a gyro sensor 16 at a vehicle position detecting section 11 or positional information from a GPS receiver. A display control section 20 at a map display control section 12 segments a detailed map in the region where the vehicle is present and describes the map on a VRAM 21. The screen of a display 40 is then checked for any missing of map. When any missing of map is found, no map can be described with the map describing data on the VRAM 21 and the part along a border line is described on the outside of a region. In other words, a wide area map is composited with a detailed map to produce a mixture map. Since a detailed map is not switched abruptly to a wide area map, the user is not bewildered. |
