The retractable table has a flat top (1) supported on side panels (2,3). The table is mounted on castors (4). Part of the back edge of the table top has a rectangular cut-out (5). This cut- out provides space for a retractable cabinet (6) that houses laboratory equipment (7,8).The cabinet can be lowered so its top surface lies flush with the top of the table, or raised. When the cabinet is raised, the laboratory equipment is accessible to the student through its open front. The cabinet is raised and lowered by a hydraulic cylinder (18) mounted directly beneath it. The cylinder is fixed on the frame of the table. The cylinder may be electrically controlled. The cabinet is mounted on a pivot (16a) so it tilts backward as it rises.
