The drum brake (1) with two brake shoes (2,3) which are held off the drum by a spring (4) and operated by a cylinder (5) contains a spacer (7), whose length is variable, which is placed between the two shoes (2,3) in the vicinity of the cylinder (5). At one end (72) of the spacer (7) is a slot (720) traversed by a lever (6) which pivots (60) on the shoe (3) and is held in its normal position by a spring (11) thus allowing a play of (D) between the lever (6) and the spacer (7).At the other end (71) of the spacer (7) is a spring loaded wedge (9) which can slide down inside a cut-out (710) so that it takes up the space (E) between the spacer and a reaction plate (20). This only occurs when the force of the cylinder (5) on braking is less than the reaction of the spring (11) on the tilting lever (6).
