PURPOSE: To obtain a rotation sensor in which reduction of the size and cost can be realized. CONSTITUTION: The rotation sensor 10 is fixed to a predetermined position of an object and when the rotation sensor 10 rotates about the rotary axis R of the object, centrifugal force F1, F2 and Coriolis force C1 , C2 act on the diffraction gratings 3, 4 of the rotation sensor 10. The Coriolis force C1 acts on the diffraction grating 3 in the direction opposite to the Coriolis force C2 acting on the diffraction grating 4 and thereby the diffraction gratings 3, 4 displace (move) from each other in the direction of x-axis. Since the Coriolis force C1 , C2 is proportional to the rotational speed, the displacement increases substantially in proportion to the rotational speed. Consequently, information related to the rotation of the object, e.g. the rotational speed (i.e., the angular speed) of the object, can be detected by detecting variation in the phase of interference fringe 12 caused by displacement of the two diffraction gratings 3, 4 in the direction of x-axis through a detection means 90. |
