PURPOSE: To provide a recording medium which uses a charge as a recording unit and is based on the action principle, that the optical properties of matter are very remarkably varied in accordance with a change in the number of electric charges and that the optical properties of matter are controlled by controlling the number of electric charges CONSTITUTION: This recording medium has underlying conductor layers 1, 3, an insulating layer 2 formed on the layers 1, 3 and a recording layer 4 having a domain structure formed on the layer 2. The recording layer 4 contains a domain forming material 5 and <=10mol% impurity 6 basing on the amt. of the material 5 and the highest occupied level of the impurity 6 has higher energy than that of the material 5 or the lowest vacant level of the impurity 6 has lower energy than that of the material 5.
