An external ligament system includes an elongated leg sheath (10) adapted to be wrapped around leg (12) to extend from the femoral area (14) across the knee (16) to the tibial area (18). The longitudinal sides are recessed at (24, 26) to leave the patella (28) exposed. A pair of hinged linkages (32, 34) are affixed to the sheath (10). Each linkage (32, 34) preferably includes a pair of elongated flat plates (36, 38) which are pivotally connected to each other by a hinge (40). A pair of cables (54, 60) is disposed on sheath (10) and crossed over the patella (28) so as to provide stabilization to the patellar (28) region of the knee.
