An aluminum nitride sinter produced by firing at a temperature as low as 1,650 DEG C or below and comprising 0.5-7 wt.% oxide of at least one group IIIa element, 0.5-3 wt.% calcium oxide, at most 1.5 wt.% aluminum oxide, 0.2-1 wt.% glass frit, at most 0.5 wt.% of at least one member selected from among oxides of manganese, chromium, zirconium, strontium and titanium, at most 1 wt.% (in terms of oxide) tungsten, and the balance consisting of aluminum nitirde. The calcium and tungsten oxides may be replaced by 1-3 wt.% calcium tungstate. Further, the glass frit may be replaced by 0.1-0.5 wt.% boron oxide, 0.05-0.2 wt.% sodium oxide, and 0.05-0.2 wt.% potassium oxide.
