A plastic star picket (10,10') having at least three radially protecting webs (12) angularly spaced from each other and radiating from a central core portion (11). The webs (12) taper at one end of the picket to a point (16) which allows the picket (10,10') to be driven into the ground. At the other end of the picket (10,10') there is provided a bearing block (17) which is integrally formed with the webs (12) and/for the core portion (11). At least one of the webs (12) has a bulbous portion (14) at a radially distal part thereof spaced from the core portion (11). The picket (10,10') preferably has three webs (12a, 12b, 12c), and the bearing block (17) preferably generally fully overlies the first and second webs (12b, 12c), and at least partly overlies the third web (12a) which has the bulbous portion (14'). At the other end of the picket (10'), the bulbous portion (14') on the third web (12a) is spaced from the bearing block (17'), and an open recess (26) is provided in the third web (12a') between the bearing block (17) and the bulbous portion (14'). The picket (10,10') may further have one or more notches (20) which extend around the outer surface of the picket (10,10') in a plane generally transverse to the longitudinal axis of the picket (10). the notch(es) (20) allow the picket (10) to be cleanly broken in the plane of the notch (20) by providing a lower breaking strain in that plane compared with that at other points along the picket: (10,10'). |
