A base station antenna arrangement is disclosed. In order to overcome the high power requirements of an omni-directional broadcast antenna which allocates a traffic channel to mobile transceivers, the invention provides a base station antenna arrangement which is capable of forming a plurality of beams. Selection means are provided which assign a single channel via one or more of these beams such that its area of coverage sweeps around the cell during a given period of time. A low power, high gain narrow beam (34) is employed in a scanned mode. Since the gain of the narrow beam antenna is greater than the gain of the omni-directional antenna, the power amplifier requirements are reduced. Corresponding savings in the cost, power consumption, power dissipation and reliability of the base station may thereby be achieved, in addition to reductions of the size and weight of the transmitter that may require installation at the top of a support structure. |
