<p>Apparatus for use in a multi-stage system in which a fluid being treated is passed in succession through a series of reaction chamber tubes (50) includes a controlled system that permits the direction of flow through the tubes (50) to be reversed while preserving the original sequence, in which the fluid progresses from tube (50) to tube (50). The tubes (50) may be reaction chambers in which chemical reactions are carried out or in which filtration occurs requiring reverse flushing. In accordance with the invention, inlet (64) and outlet (66) ports are located at opposite ends of each tube (50) from the inlet (62) and outlet (68) ports used as original connections. Flow through the ports (62, 64, 66 and 68) is by valves (58, 60, 74, 76), and the valves (58, 76) are operated in unison, as are the valves (60, 74). The valves (58 and 76) open and the valves (60 and 74) are closed for forward flow. For reversed flow, the valves (58 and 76) are closed and the valves (60 and 74) are open.</p> |
