The strip or band (3) of adhesive is applied to a surface (2) from a nozzle (1) moved along a definite path (A). Behind the nozzle a beam (12) of light from a fibre-optic bundle (10) is directed at the freshly deposited material. The reflection parallel to the vertical axis of the nozzle is collected (9) and diverted by a mirror (18) on to a scanned matrix of digital photosensitive cells (19). The incident beam is angled so that a bright zone and a dark zone are created at the trailing and leading edges of the illuminated area.
