An injection moulding machine has a fixed tool-carrying platen (2) on the machine base (1) and a moving tool-carrying platen (4) supported on the base (1) by a sliding shoe (5). The tie bars (3) can be connected to either platen (2, 4) and locked at a desired position to the other. Rapid closure power units (6, 7) connect both platens. Unsymmetrical deformation of the platens (2, 4) is reduced when either platen (2, 4) comprises two parallel plates one (11) of which is a pressure plate supported on the bars (3) and the other (2) carries the tool and is guided along the tie bars. Clamping force power units (15, 16) are positioned between the pressure (11) and tool carrying (12) plates.Pref. different version of the arrangement include: (a) a two plate moving tie bars (3) and tool-carrying plate (12) guided by the tie bars (3); (b) a two plate fixed platen with the pressure plate connected to the tie bars (3) and machine base and the tool-carrying plate guided along the tie bars (3); (c) a two plate fixed platen with a pressure plate connected to the tie bars (3) and the tool-carrying plate connected to the machine base and supporting the tie bars. Clamping force power units comprise hydraulic pistons (15) on the tool-carrying plate (12) guided by cylinders (16) in the pressure plate (11). Detachable pistons (19) in the pressure plate (11) pass through the large dia. pistons (15) and are guided in detachable cylinders (20) in the pistons (15).
