Compactor and/or size reducer for thermoplastics comprises a jaw crusher, with an oscillating link section driven by an eccentric shaft at the material inlet. At the outlet it passes through an oscillating lever section. In the new arrangement, size reduction and compaction take place in a passage, the narrowest gap of which lies at a point above the support for the oscillating lever, where the link makes an approximately oval motion, the resultant of the eccentric drive and motion running nearly parallel to the fixed plate. Compaction is accompanied by a simultaneous shearing.
