The apparatus for separating a card (1) from a pile (2) includes a separating well (3) for receiving the pile and a transport device (14). The transport device has an input element, which can be arranged in the removal position (13) adjacent to the card (10) to be separated to receive and detect the card at the edge region (18).The input element can be moved, together with the card to be separated, from the removal position into the delivery position. In one embodiment the input element is a separating groove (20).
