The invention concerns an electric switch comprising a vacuum switching chamber as the switching element for switching direct and/or alternating currents. In order to be able to switch direct currents also with an electric switch whose switching element consists of a vacuum switching chamber (10), a plurality of measures are provided. The contact material (17, 21) is a high-melting material with positive magnetic susceptibility. In order to generate both an axial and a radial magnetic field in the region of the breaker gap, the current path formed by the two contact members (15, 16, 17, 19, 20, 21) comprises radial sections whose axial distance from the breaker gap varies. In addition, a capacitor (8), whose capacity is 10<2> to 10<5> times the capacity of the open contact members, is disposed electrically parallel to the breaker gap. A vacuum switching chamber of this type is suitable for switching direct currents in low and medium-voltage ranges and can also be used for switching low and high-frequency alternating currents.
