PRODUCTION OF ALKYL PHENYL SULFONE

PURPOSE: To safely and simply obtain an alkylphenyl sulfide useful as an intermediate, etc., for medicines from inexpensive raw materials in high yield by reacting a halobenzene with an alkyl mercaptan in the presence of a base. CONSTITUTION: (A) Acompound of formula I (R<1> is an alkylcarbonyl, an arylcarbonyl or CN; X is a halogen) is reacted with (B) an alkyl mercaptan in the presence of (C) a base such as sodium hydroxide to afford thy objective compound of formula II (R<2> is a 1-4C alkyl). Furthermore, the reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of (D) a phase-transfer catalyst such as tetra-n- butylammonium brimide or tetra-n-butylphosphonium bromide at 60-110C temperature. The respective components are used in molar amounts of 1.0-2.0 times component (B) and 0.8-3.5 times component (C) based on the component (A) and the component (D) is used in an amount of 0.1-10wt.% based on the component (A).
