PURPOSE: To produce a highly erosion resistant metal mold for casting or member to be in contact with molten metal, having practical properties, such as sufficient toughness and machinability, and excellent in erosion resistance particularly to molten Al and molten Zn. CONSTITUTION: A member, which has a composition consisting of, by weight ratio, >0.1-1.2% C, 0.1-3% Si, 5-25% Mn, 4-25% Cr, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities and further containing, if necessary, one or >=2 kinds selected from the five elements consisting of 0.5-15%, in total, of one or >=2 elements among W, Mo, and V 0.5-4% Ni, and 0.5-10% Co, is subjected to carburizing treatment, where >=20vol.% carbides are dispersed in the region of >=50μm in the surface layer part, or, the outermost layer part is further subjected, after the carburizing treatment, to either of nitriding treatment and boronizing treatment independently or in combination with both the treatments. By this method, the metal mold for casting or member to be in contact with molten metal, having a surface treatment layer and excellent in erosion resistance, can be obtained.
