Low carbon steel containing excess titanium@ - coated with aluminium@ by hot dipping for exhaust gas catalytic filter casing

Steel strip for making exhaust gas catalytic filter casings is of low carbon steel containing Ti in amount at least 0.075 (pref. 0.100 - 0.150) wt.% in excess of the combined Ti and is coated by hot dipping in a bath of Al, possibly containing 6 - 10 wt.% Si, to form a protective layer 0.2 - 2.5 mm thick. The amount of combined Ti in the steel is defined by the equation: Ti wt.% = (4 x wt.% C) + (3.5 x wt.% N) + (1.5 x wt.% S), the amounts of C, N and S in the steel being known when it is made or measured.
