The alarm system comprises detection means which are arranged at an exit slip road and can detect if a vehicle is travelling in the wrong direction along the slip road, and means for stopping the vehicle which is driving in the wrong direction. The detection means may comprise electronic detection loops beneath the surface course of the roadway.
