PURPOSE: To reproduce an image at high picture quality by automatically setting the amount of additional ink to an appropriate value. CONSTITUTION: A signal input means 1 converts e.g. RGB signals to obtain lightness L*, a hue H*ab, and a saturation C*ab. A means 2 for detecting the limit amount of additional ink retrieves a database 23 to calculate a maximum amount (kmax) of additional ink and a minimum amount (kmin) of additional ink. A means 3 for determining an additional ink factor calculates a factor A=(t+sL*)×(1-C*ab<u> ) (s, t, u are constants). A means 4 for determining the amount of additional ink calculates the amount (k) of additional ink=A (kmax-kmin)+kmin. A means 5 for determining color signals retrieves a database 51 based on the lightness L*, the hue H*ab and the saturation C*ab from the signal input means 1 and on the amount (k) of additional ink from the means 4 for determining the amount of additional ink, then calculates the value of each of yellow, magenta, and cyan color signals, and outputs those signals together with a signal of the amount (k) of additional ink.
