Carbon fibre is coated with two different refractory coatings by passing through a first chamber (6) into which a gaseous mixture of H2 and a volatile compound, which will react with the carbon, is flowed counter-current to the fibre. The fibre is heated to bring about the chemical vapour deposition of the first coating (32). The fibre then passes through a second chamber (15) through which H2 and another volatile compound is flowing counter-current to the fibre and a second different coating (33) is produced. The coatings produced are either carbides, oxides, borides, nitrides, silicides or ternary compounds.
