The plate (10) comprises at least one assembly of a ceramic layer (12) and a metal layer (13), with the two layers joined together by a transitional layer (6) of a metal/ceramic mixt. in which one or other of the components is modified and in the same direction between the metal layer and the ceramic layer.The metal layer and the transitional layer are of the same metal, e.g. a lightweight metal alloy. The ceramic layer can be sandwiched between two transitional layers which are themselves sandwiched between two metal layers. One or more portions of the ceramic layer, the transitional layer or a supplementary layer (17) contain or are made from a material which absorbs radioactive radiation.
