PURPOSE: To provide a ferroelectric liquid crystal display element which is large in cell gap and is producible at a high yield. CONSTITUTION: This ferroelectric liquid crystal display element is composed of a pair of substrates 11, 12 formed with electrodes 22, 31 and oriented films 23, 32 on opposite surfaces, ferroelectric liquid crystals 13, a pair of polarizing plates 14, 15 and a phase plate 16. The ratio Δn.d/λ of the product of the product Δn.d of the refractive index anisotropy An of the ferroelectric liquid crystals 13 and the thickness (d) thereof and the prescribed wavelength x of a visible region satisfies the relation Δn.d/λ=-m+1/2 with respect to an integer (m) of >=1. As a result, (d) is made as large as about >=6μm. The phase plate 16 prevents the coloration of the display by increasing of (d). |
