Two parallel hollow aluminium cylinders are supported by bearings in end brackets serving as air-flow inlets and outlets. Air traversing one cylinder (9) carries heat derived e.g. from the vehicle's traction motor losses.The other cylinder (10) is cooled by connections from the vehicle's cooling system. A belt (11), comprising e.g. 100 strands of nickel/titanium or other alloy exhibiting form-remembering properties, passes round both cylinders.The belt material has previously been submitted to an "educative" process. Relaxed at lower temperatures, it tightens when contact with the warm cylinder raises its temperature above a threshold value. The resulting alternating tension changes produce mechanical output torque which e.g. drives a generator and battery charger. |
