PURPOSE: To provide a surface irradiating device and a display device by which a light conductive plate does not become thick and average brightness of emitting surfaces is not reduced even if plural straight line-shaped light source are used. CONSTITUTION: Straight line-shaped light sources 1 have straight line-shaped bulbs 11 having a tube diameter (d), and covering bodies 12 where a cross-sectional dimension (s) in the direction orthogonal to the bulb lengthwise direction is wider than the tube diameter (d), are arranged on both ends of these bulbs 11. A light conductive plate 2 being an almost rectangular plate shape has an incident surface 21 on an end surface and an emitting surface 22 on one surface, and the short direction of the incident surface 21 is formed in a width dimension W. The straight line-shaped light sources 1 are mutually different in the shortest distances L and L' up to the incident surface 21 between at least the adjacent bulbs 11, and are arranged so that projected images of the bulbs 11 on the incident surface 21 do not overlap with each other. The width dimension W in the short direction of the incident surface of the light conductive plate is formed so as to satisfy the relationship of [d×n<=W<=d×(n+2) or d×n<=W<=s×n], assuming that the straight line-shaped light sources 1 are n (n>=2). |
