An assembly collects a mixture of oil and effluent water (11) and separates the oil from the water for subsequent disposal. It consists of a tank (14) holding dirty water (11) from which cleaner water (15) is separated and an oil tank (1 6) into which oil (18) is discharged from the separator (17). The novelty is that when the oil content in the cleaner low-purity water (15) exceeds a given threshold value, the water (15) is diverted to a membrane separator (19) assembly. Water leaving the separator (19) is discharged as clean water (20), while the retained oil emulsion substances (21) are returned to a holding vessel (22).
