The driving characteristics control system continuously detects the slip (S) of the vehicle wheels, for corresponding adjustment of the function of the servo steering system, by altering the characteristics of at least one of the steering system components (HV, HP).Pref. the degree of assistance provided by the servo steering system is varied in inverse proportion to the detected wheel slip, with the servo steering system de-activated upon reaching a defined wheel slip threshold value and used to increase the required steering force when the detected wheel slip reaches a second higher threshold value.
