A lap tray (1) is disclosed for carrying food and having particular application for use by an individual riding as a passenger in a motor vehicle that is subjected to road turbulence. The lap tray (1) includes a pair of food serving compartments (2 and 3), each of which is surrounded by a raised lip (4) to prevent food carried thereon from falling off the tray (1). A raised annular rim (6) surrounds a hole (8) formed through the tray (1) in which a drinking cup (10) is received so as to retain the cup (10) in an upright configuration and thereby prevent the cup from tipping and spilling its contents. A pair of parallel legs (12) depends from the tray (1) at opposite sides thereof to extend downwardly along the legs of the user so as to stabilize the tray against lateraldisplacement when the user is seated and the tray is laid across the user's lap.
