A loading apparatus includes a cartridge holder for holding a disk cartridge used as a recording medium of information signals, and moving the disk cartridge between a first position at which loading and removal of the disk cartridge can be effected and a second position at which the disk cartridge is engaged with fitting portion of a recording/reproduction portion; an elevation operation mechanism including an elevation operation plate for moving up and down the cartridge holder to the fitting portion; and a drive mechanism for moving and operating the cartridge holder and the elevation operation plate. This drive mechanism moves the cartridge holder from the first position to the second position when a rotary member rotates within a first range of rotation, and moves the elevation operation plate when the rotary member rotates within the second range of rotation that continues to the first range of rotation. When the cartridge holder is moved between the first position and the second position, a limitation mechanism for limiting the movement with respect to a base plate on which the recording/reproduction portion of the cartridge holder is further provided to the apparatus. The elevation operation plate releases restriction of the movement of the cartridge holder in the interlocking arrangement with the movement of the cartridge holder in the approaching/departing operation to and from the fitting portion, and allows its movement in the approaching/departing direction. Accordingly, a series of operations ranging from the transfer operation of the disk cartridge held by the cartridge holder to the fitting operation to the fitting portion can be carried out by a common drive mechanism.
