A positioning system for round wood topping installations is disclosed. Round wood (8) supplied in the longitudinal direction reaches a stop (20, 22) that moves back and forth in the same direction as the round wood and is then stopped together with the stop for sawing in a predetermined position in relation to a transversely moving saw blade (14). The system is characterised in that the round wood is received behind the saw blade on a belt conveyor (4) along which the stop (20, 22) can be moved by its own drive. The drives of the belt conveyor and stop can be controlled in a mutually dependent manner so that when the round wood arrives the stop slightly lags behind the belt conveyor and when the stop reaches the position that corresponds to the topping dimension the belt conveyor and the stop are stopped together. Round wood may thus be continuously positioned extremely fast at one go. In addition, since the round wood may be slowed down according to a predetermined increasing braking function, the sawing process may be started even before the stop reaches the position that corresponds to the topping dimension.
