A ratchetable open-ended wrench (10) which allows application of sequential strokes to a rotatable element without removing the wrench from the element is disclosed. A spring-mounted, retractable jaw member (15) having an exposed engaging surface (14) on one side is linearly slidable within a slot (23) in one of the jaws (12) and is biased toward the base (61) of the wrench head (20). The opposing jaw (11) has a fixed engaging surface (13) extending substantially parallel to the engaging surface (14) on the retractable jaw member (15). The two engaging surfaces (13, 14) cooperate to grip a rotatable element and apply torque to the element to rotate it in one direction. On the return stroke, the retractable jaw member (15) is forced inward into its slot (23) allowing the wrench to rotate back around the element without turning it in the reverse direction.
