The control device (6) has a selection device (18), operated by the driver, for selecting parking, reverse, neutral and drive modes. The control device is used to switch between a number of preset gear ratios for simulating a switched transmission, with a detection device (40) responding to slow movement of the vehicle to activate an adaption device (41) allowing the highest gear ratio to be reduced upon reaching a given input revs. Pref. the detection device responds to the throttle pedal being depressed by less than a given amount, with the depression rate simultaneously remaining below a defined threshold value, to indicate the slow movement of the vehicle.
