A motor vehicle security system which prevents unauthorised starting of the engine has a control unit (1) which contains the usual engine controlled electronics (5) and an additional start-release module (4). A conventional coded transponder key (3) and its associated signal data exchange unit (2) initiate a release signal via the bi-directional data channels (11, 12) whose input to the release module (4) at the terminal (6) is routed via the conductor (50b) and hence via the main battery conductor (50). On closing the ignition switch (13) the controller (5), having been enabled by the release module (4), channels power to the starter motor (not shown) via the conductor (50a).
