The sequential scan type converter associated with the video decoder comprises: a video decoding means for restoring motion information and macro block type signal, outputting an error signal, and compensating for motion using a motion compensation signal; a demultiplexing means for using the motion information, macro block type and error signals, and dividing into an odd or even field; a first and second sequential scan type converting means for converting the respective field signals into a sequential scan format; a second and third frame memory means for storing the output signals of the first and second sequential converting means; and a first multiplexing means for reading out the output signals alternately from the first and second sequential scan type converting means at a doubled speed.
