A method for insulating a metal conductor by covering it with at least one layer of inorganic electrical insulation material comprises applying particulate inorganic insulation material to the pure, active and hot surface of the freshly extruded conductor immediately after it leaves the extruder and then controlling coating conditions so that the inorganic powder is converted into an at least partially sintered ceramic layer with good adhesion to the conductor surface is formed.Preferably the inorganic powder is a metal oxide, especially alumina, and contains a natural or synthetic silicate material, preferably mica. A sealing and/or lubricating layer is applied to the ceramic coating. Also claimed are (i) insulated wires made by this method and (ii) the extrusion machinery used to make these wires. |
