The display device includes light guiding layer (2) which has cladding layers (3,4) on the front and back,and device (5,6) for varying the index of refraction of the light guiding layers or one (4) of them spot-wise to enable light to be tapped from the light guiding layer at any desired spot (14). Colour filters are grouped in threes, each of different colour, and the index of refraction varying device is adapted to vary the intensity of light tapped into any desired spot in such a manner that the light reflected from the reflective layer is coloured in any desired colour. - A reflecting layer (19) is provided on the back to totally reflect any light (1) tapped from the light guiding layer (2) towards the front side. The reflecting layer is made of microscopic prisms which are formed as pyramids or cones. The edges of the light guiding layer are coated with highly reflective material (9). A device is provided to synchronise the tapping of light from light guiding layer at any desired spot with illumination of the respective coloured light source. The light diffusing layer (21) is provided in front of the light reflecting layer. |
