<p>In an internal combustion engine (1) three or more intake openings (18,19) are arrayed left and right on one side (of the cylinder bore) in the cylinder head (7) in the fore-aft direction. On the side, fewer exhaust openings (24) are arrayed left and right. The air intake openings (18,19) are opened and closed by air intake valves (26,27) and the exhaust openings (24) are opened and closed by exhaust valves (32). When viewed from the side, the first intersecting angle (&thetas;1) is defined as the angle between the axis (3) of the cylinder (2) and the axis (73) of the centre air intake valve (26). The second intersecting angle (&thetas;2) is the angle between the axis (3) of the same cylinder (2) and the axis (74) of the side air intake valves (27). The third intersecting angle (&thetas;3) is the angle between the axis (3) of the same cylinder (2) and the axis (75) of the exhaust valve (32).
