PURPOSE: To obtain a liq. crystal display element which requires a low driving voltage, does not require a polarizing plate, and enables a high-contrast display and direct-sight display with a good visiblity by inserting a nematic liq. crystal material and a polymer of a polymerizable chiral monomer having an asymmetric carbon between two substrates. CONSTITUTION: A nematic liq. crystal material and a chiral nematic liq. crystal material contg. a polymerizable chiral monomer having an asymmetric carbon are injected into between two substrates of which each has an electrode layer, at least one is transparent, and on the at least one electrode layer the horizontal or vertical orientation treatment is applied. The liq. crystal material may contain a dichroic color if necessary and pref. has a fixed pitch of 0.5-145μm. The substrates with the liq. crystal materials injected into between them are heated or irradiated with ultraviolet rays to polymerize the chiral polymerizable monomer having an asymmetric carbon atom, giving a liq. crystal display element. Pref. the thickness of the element is such that the distance between the substrates is 2-20μm.
